MRI or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a simple, painless analysis, commonly recommended for people with cancer. Through electromagnetic waves, high-power magnets and an ultra-high performance computer, this analysis helps to obtain very detailed images, from many angles, of sections of the human body and can distinguish normal tissues from damaged ones.
MRI plays a very important role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, because it can indicate precisely the areas where there is tumor tissue, as well as the stage of its development. It is a recommended analysis also for the identification of metastases.
In the case of soft tissue analysis in the body, magnetic resonance imaging is often recommended to the detriment of computed tomography (CT), because it is more accurate due to the contrast substances used. Moreover, MRI is much safer for the patient because it does not use X-rays, as opposed to CTs and x-rays. Thus, it is indicated in case of suspected cancer of the head, spinal cord, bones etc.
The MRI is especially indicated for the identification of:
- Brain tumors
- Bone cancer
- Soft tissue sarcoma
- Blood cancers
MRI is also indicated in the early stages of cervical or bladder cancer, but also for tissue visualization after surgical or radiotherapeutic / chemotherapeutic treatment.
This procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes and you do not need to follow specific recommendations before performing it. It is very important, however, to tell your doctor or imager if you have recently undergone surgery, if you are pregnant (MRI is not recommended in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy) or have a cardiac implant (pacemaker, cardiac stent), cochlear or other metallic devices in the body - the device uses powerful magnets that can affect their functioning. Also, you should not wear jewelry (earrings, bracelets, rings, watches, etc.), hair clips, keys, coins, cards, etc. If you are wearing a zipper or other metallic detail, you will be asked to undress.
In the case of obese people, it is possible to recommend another image analysis, because there is a risk that the patient will not fit in the device. If you suffer from claustrophobia, it is possible that the medical staff will give you gentle soothing to make you feel more comfortable.
In certain situations, it is necessary for the patient to swallow or inject a contrast substance, which helps to identify the problematic tissues. If you know you are suffering from various allergies, you need to inform your doctor about this.
At first glance, the idea of sitting still for 30-60 minutes in a donut-shaped appliance may seem daunting, but you don't have to worry, because the bed and pillows inside are very comfortable. The special table you will be sitting in will enter a long cylinder, which will scan the body parts indicated by the doctor. You may have a slight sensation of heat in these areas during the test, but there is nothing to worry about.
The appliance pulls out a washer-like nozzle, so it can be annoying to some people. In such situations, headphones can be made available for listening to music.
There are some side effects that you may experience from MRI examination. For example, if you look at a metal object or have a metal implant and you have not informed your doctor about it, it may not work properly. This is especially dangerous for cardiac patients who have a cardiac stent or pacemaker.
Also, some people may suffer from panic attacks when they hear the noise of the unit and feel suffocated due to lack of space. Other times, there may be adverse reactions to the contrast substance, such as nausea, dizziness, pain in the body or head, skin irritation, sensation of fainting, hypotension, heavy sweating, weakness or difficulty breathing, swelling at the injection site. The same contrast substance can lead to complications in people suffering from kidney disease and dialysis. Such symptoms should be reported immediately
There are many myths circulating about MRI examination, by far the most widely known being that radiation exposure would promote cancer. Here are the most common misconceptions about magnetic resonance imaging:
- May cause cancer - FALSE
The device does not use the X-rays you are afraid of, but implies the use of the electromagnetic field, which does not present a risk of irradiation, whenever it is needed.
- Not useful in cancer screening - FALSE
- MRI examination is indeed used, especially for injuries suffered at the osteoarticular level (fractures, ligament ruptures or tendons, etc.), but may also be recommended for the detection of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease or bipolar disorder.
- MRI is also useful for the early detection of various types of cancer, for the identification of cranial diseases - stroke, nerve damage -, of the spine, abdomen-elves (kidney, pancreatic, liver, ovarian, prostate, etc.). ), chest (heart, lungs, breasts).
- The open MRI is as effective as the closed one - FALSE
- A closed MRI device is more efficient and offers more accurate results than the open one. Even though it may seem more comfortable to do an MRI in an open device, you need to be aware that the standard, closed device is capable of producing more qualitative images and, therefore, this can have a significant impact on the diagnosis.
